Will NEET 2025 Exam Be Conducted In The Two Stages?
According to the various news sources on November 1, 2024, the committee submitted its report to the education ministry. The panel suggested that online mode of exam must be encouraged wherever possible, or hybrid mode of exam where NEET question papers can be sent to exam centers digitally and students can record their answers on the OMR sheet. Further, the report suggested that NEET can be held in two phases, like JEE.
Based on the latest updates, there is a high chance that NEET 2025 will be conducted in two phases, i.e., preliminary and main. Students should continuously check the official websites and get the latest updates related to the NEET examination.
The tug of war between the mode of exams—will it be online or offline—will not end soon. Let’s go into the history of the examination. The Medical Council of India (MCI) introduced NEET in 2013 to ensure uniform admissions to medical and dental colleges. The exam was replaced with the multiple state and national-level tests.
In 2018, education minister Prakash Javadekar stated that NEET would be conducted online and twice a year starting in 2019. But, due to the Health Ministry's objection to the announcement being made without formal consultation, the Education Ministry withdraws the decision. The Health Ministry was concerned that computer-based tests would be unfair for the students living in rural areas.
Moving on to the time of COVID, when examinations and education shifted from offline to online mode. The NEET 2020 was still conducted offline with the rigorous safety protocol and measures.
When it comes to students, they are against this leak fiasco, and they are raising their voices in support of the CBT mode of examination. Although there are a few batches of students who are not in support of this mode of examination.
Pros And Cons Of Conducting NEET 2025 Exam In Two Phases:
Pros
Conducting NEET 2025 in two phases through CBT mode is beneficial in many ways. Some of the major pros are mentioned below:
- Minimize Pressure on Students:
By conducting the exam into two phases, students will have time and opportunity to perform well. If they feel like they underperform in the first phase, they can redeem themselves in the second phase.
- Representation of Skills:
The two-phase format can give a more comprehensive view of a student’s capabilities; they can examine their strengths and weaknesses.
- Fair conduct of exam:
The paper leak is less likely to happen online, which prevents any discrepancy. Students can easily access the exam even if they are ill; they can get a time to rest and appear for the next phase by managing their health.
- Better Time Management:
Spreading out the exam over two phases can help ease the pressure on both students and exam authorities by distributing the workload. This can lead to more organized scheduling and better management of exam logistics.
- Increase in Efficiency:
Online mode of the examination will reduce the issue of slow processing.
Cons
Over 24 lakh students appear for the NEET 2024 examination, and the number is likely to increase in the coming years. Considering this huge number and the different geographical conditions of India, there are some cons to conducting NEET 2025 in online mode.
- Increased financial burden:
Since lakhs of students appear for the NEET, the NTA will have to ensure all the exam centers are fully connected with the high internet speed.
- Stress of multiple attempts:
For some students, the pressure of appearing for the exam twice might increase stress levels. This could lead to burnout, particularly for those who are anxious or unprepared.
- Administrative Challenges:
Organizing two separate phases of the exam can lead to logistical challenges, such as ensuring the availability of enough exam centers, staff, and online resources. There is also a risk of errors or chaos.
Conclusion
Currently, there has been no official confirmation regarding the decision to conduct the NEET 2025 exam in two phases. While the proposal of a two-phase NEET exam offers several advantages, it also introduces potential drawbacks. These include logistical challenges for exam organizers, and the possibility of added stress for candidates.
The decision to hold NEET 2025 in two phases will likely depend on multiple factors, including feedback from previous exam cycles, the capacity of educational institutions and authorities to manage such an approach, and the overall impact on student’s well-being and fairness in the selection process. Until an official announcement is made by the exam conducting body students and educational stakeholders must await further clarity on the structure of the NEET 2025 exam. Just keep in mind if the exam is held in two phases then prelims will be conducted by NTA and main will be conducted by AIIMS.
Till any official notice, students are advised to focus on their preparation for NEET 2025, remaining adaptable to potential changes.
